Palin & The People

Pandering To The People

As with many elections throughout history, the current race for the presidency has become mired with the warm sounding rhetoric of populist politics. The air of this race has become thick with the nauseating odor of the standard populist appeals to the interests of regular, middle-class Americans. Unsurprisingly, America’s recent economic crisis has resulted in an amplification of populist rhetoric on the campaign trail, and nothing is more cliché than politicians claiming to be on the side of the average Joe. What makes this all the more sickening to a cynic, like myself, is that both parties have adopted this populist style of discourse, though obviously the McCain/Palin ticket is the late-comer to this rhetorical celebration of regular folks. What one should remember is that populism isn’t necessarily an ideological disposition or a specific set of policies. It is more like a style of political seduction, sophistry and spectacle for plebeian consumption.
Also, in this age of visual media, populism has been turned into image and appearances. Nowadays, candidates are either elites trying to put on the façade of being a regular Joe Sixpack or philistines attempting to masquerade themselves as competent enough to actually carry out the duties of the position they are seeking to fill. What we are examining in this article is the latter type of candidate, which is exemplified by America’s sweetheart Sarah Palin. Her appeal to average, down-home Middle Americans has become a political tool used by the Republican party and should not be underestimated and taken lightly by the Democratic party. Like our current dear leader George W. Bush, Sarah Palin’s appeal to politically illiterate Joe Schmoes could, scary as it may sound, be one of the deciding factors in this year’s elections. And what we all should do is to try to see these appeals to the common man for what they are: superficial and ultimately meaningless gift-wrappings used to make specific policies look sexier to the average voter. Only then can we force the image and illusion of having love for the people to become actual, material practice of showing love to the people.

Palin’s Populism

“I'm not a member of the permanent political establishment. And I've learned quickly, these past few days, that if you're not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone. But here's a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion. I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country. Americans expect us to go to Washington for the right reasons, and not just to mingle with the right people.” –Sarah Palin’s RNC speech

Ever since John McCain surprised us all with his pick of Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate, she has coated the Republican ticket’s campaign with a thick outer layer of conservative populism. It’s pretty safe to say that her appearance on the political scene was for nothing but mere appearances and was, in part, a result of the necessity for John McCain’s campaign to find a way to reach out to white, female voters and to the conservative Republican base. Like the beauty queen she is, she seems to expect that dolling herself up for the public, strutting on stage and saying the right combination of phrases will be enough to win over voters. Sarah Palin, right from her speech at the Republican convention, has gleefully waved around her credentials as your average, down-home Hockey mom who will use her powers of reform to fight against big government, high taxes, and wasteful spending. Armed with a fundamentalist Christian faith, five kids, a blue-collar husband, and a quaint accent, she has wooed traditional conservatives in Middle America and has stirred up excitement within the Republican party. Governor Palin’s obvious lack of foreign policy experience and her seemingly puerile approach to economic policy, which hardly seems to go beyond ranting against pork-barrel spending and high taxes, both clearly illustrate an unadulterated intellectual mediocrity. Her interviews with Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric have also helped to horrifically unveil the utter poverty of her intellectual capabilities and political-savviness. To people who Fox news viewers may label as “liberal elitists”, the spectacle of Sarah Palin has transformed into a terrifying yet comical parody of itself. Her claims that being able to see Russia from Alaska qualifies as foreign policy experience and that she reads all the newspapers that get put in front of her have been laughed at and mocked by liberals for good reason. But at the same time, her awe-inspiring ineptitude and apparent mis-education on the basics of politics is something that we all should fear.

“Oh I think they’re just not used to someone coming in from the outside saying you know what? It’s time that normal Joe Six-pack American is finally represented in the position of vice presidency. And I think that’s taken some people off guard, and they’re out of sorts, and they’re ticked off about it.” –Sarah Palin to Hugh Hewitt

But, to Palin and the Republicans’ credit, there’s a good chance that Sarah Barracuda’s uncut mediocrity is part of her populist appeal to many Americans in the heartland. Her culturally backwards and conspicuously uninformed positions on social issues such as gay-marriage, abortion, creationism/evolution in science classes, the drug war, and stem cell research are actually very popular amongst the demographic that she is supposed to court. Also, she and McCain have portrayed themselves as the champions of rallying against the “old boys’ network” in Washington, even though McCain has been a senator since 1987 and would be the oldest president ever to take office were he to be elected. They both have vowed to voters that they could be counted on to cleanse Washington and Wall Street of greed, corruption, and elitism as if they were Jesus driving the thieves from the temple. All of this obvious pandering to “regular people” has struck a chord amongst voters and like many elections past, the Republicans have managed to fool a sizable percentage of the electorate into believing that they are the party of the “average American”. And this is all mostly due to this boob with boobs, this hardheaded airhead, this politically illiterate politician, Sarah Palin. She has truly shown herself to be the archetypical Republican populist: a proudly ignorant, good-looking, folksy bimbo who makes decisions from the gut and “without blinking.” Now, the question we as voters should be asking ourselves is, are we ready to let the pure image and spectacle of populism deceive us into voting against our real interests or will we help strike a blow against all those Machiavellian political strategists who think that some nice-sounding words and a good back story is all a candidate needs to win elections? We shall see. But as I mentioned earlier, I’m a cynic.

This Is The End For You, My Friend...

R.I.P. St. Hillary

A few words in remembrance of our friend, our fellow sufferer, our comrade in the fight against History and the condition of Man... Hillary Clinton. No one has fought the good fight like this woman. From the infidelities of her husband up until the last breaths of this campaign, she has overcome hardship after hardship while resiliently enduring it all and coming back for more. She practically witnessed her promised presidential term dissolve before her eyes because of Our Savior Barack Obama's divine miracle workings. Some of you may say,

"But she was a monster!"

"Did you see what she did to our Lord Obama?"

"She was hate-filled, a panderer, and arrogant"

"She deserves no respect"

"She was a liar who thought the presidency was owed to her"

"Why honor such a horrible person?"

"Why did she persist if her defeat was destined to happen?"

And we will smile and say... Can't you understand why she did what she did? Have you ever fought with all your might against an inevitable misfortune? Have you ever had a dream within reaching distance only to have it disappear when you grasped at it? Do we all not participate in a pointless campaign despite the fact that we know that death awaits us at the end? Yes, she was egoistic and imperfect, but such is the human condition. That is why we mustn't reject her, but rather, we should embrace her all the more. She is our role model for the existential war we wage everyday we live. She is our knight against Fate, our shining star, our saint of metaphysical rebellion. BUT NO TEARS! NO CRYING! All noble undertakings must end. And her corpse, which fell valiantly in battle, will serve to fertilize the soil in which Barack The Messiah will plant the seeds of CHANGE, HOPE, and The Kingdom of God! THAT shall be her ultimate achievement and her claim to sainthood!

Hillary, Hegel, History, & The Kingdom of Heaven

1. Obama, Spirit, And The Spirit Of Obama

“Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The TIME IS FULFILLED, and the KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND: REPENT YE, and BELIEVE the GOSPEL.” [Mark 1:14-15]

Before beginning, I must apologize to those who might see the following as incredibly Hegelian in spirit. I admit that I cannot prove that Barack Obama campaign’s inevitable success was fatefully predetermined by the rational development and unfolding of the Absolute Spirit (though one could feasibly make the case). Yet one cannot deny that, from the beginning, the Barack Obama movement has been so seemingly unstoppable, as to appear to be an event which is historically and dialectically necessary. The Messianic and theological connotations associated with the great, historical Obama campaign have transformed it into something transcendent and mystical. The divine and spiritual forces that, by all appearances, have been driving the Cult of Obama has drawn disciples through the Gospel of giving people HOPE for CHANGE.THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND!” Much like the mustard seed which Jesus spoke of, Our Savior Barack Obama has planted a small seed of optimism and faith in the future in the minds of the American public which has grown into the enormously powerful Obama movement. Despite all these physical, spiritual, political, and historical forces acting against her, Hillary Clinton decided to be, depending on how one interprets her actions, either the Supreme Revolutionary or the Supreme Egoist [or both!!] by choosing to stay in the race and fight Our Lord Barack Christ, Spirit, and History.

It is the same with all great historical individuals: their own particular purposes contain the substantial will of the World Spirit. They must be called “heroes,” insofar as they have derived their purpose and vocation not from the calm, regular course of things, sanctioned by the existing order, but from a secret source whose content is still hidden and has not yet broken through into existence. The source of their actions is the inner spirit, still hidden beneath the surface but already knocking against the outer world as against a shell, in order, finally, to burst forth and break it into pieces; for it is a kernel different from that which belongs to the shell. They are men, therefore, who appear to draw the impulses of their lives from themselves. Their deeds have produced a condition of things and a complex of historical relations that appear to be their own interest and their own work. Such individuals have no consciousness of the Idea as such. They are practical and political men. But at the same time they are thinkers with insight into what is needed and timely. They see the very truth of their age and their world, the next genus, so to speak, which is already formed in the womb of time. It is theirs to know this new universal, the necessary next stage of their world, to make it their own aim and put all their energy into it. The world-historical persons, the heroes of their age, must therefore be recognized as its seers – their words and deeds are the best of the age. Great men have worked for their own satisfaction and not that of others. Whatever prudent designs and well-meant counsels they might have gotten from others would have been limited and inappropriate under the circumstances. For it is they who knew best and from whom the others eventually learned and with whom they agreed or, at least, complied. For Spirit, in taking this new historical step, is the innermost soul of all individuals – but in a state of unconsciousness, which the great men arouse to consciousness. For this reason their fellow men follow these soul-leaders, they stream to their banner. For they feel the irresistible power of their own spirit embodied in them.” – Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

2. To Wrestle With Fate

OUR WILLS and FATES do so contrary run
That our devices still are overthrown;
Our THOUGHTS are OURS, their ENDS none of our own.” - William Shakespeare

Hillary, though powerless against the powers that be, chose to strike out, like a cornered animal, against Barack Obama with the now infamous “kitchen sink” strategy. She refused to explicitly refute the allegations that Obama The Redeemer Of White Guilt is a crypto-Muslim. She tried to accuse Our Holy Shepherd Obama of being tied to past illegal actions in association with Chicago slumlords. Geraldine Ferraro claimed that Barack Obama’s blackness, which itself was in question not more than a few months prior, was the main factor in his success. Bill Clinton condescendingly compared Barack Obama’s campaign to Jesse Jackson’s past presidential campaign after Obama’s win in the South Carolina primary. Hillary, all the while, continued to loudly and obnoxiously make the case that Barack’s rhetoric was vacuous, that he was inexperienced, that he couldn’t win over white, working class voters. Her campaign referred to Bill Richardson as a “Judas” for even daring to support Obama.(OH THE IRONY!) She spit in the face of left-wing site MoveOn.org, a site originally created in support of her husband Bill during the worst times of his administration, only then to turn around and embraced the conservative media hitmen at Fox News and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, two media outlets which played large roles in the slandering and impeachment of her husband. She slammed Barack over the Jeremiah Wright fiasco and milked it for all it was worth. She brushed off calls for her to end her campaign despite the damn-near mathematical impossibility of her victory. And one need not even doubt her purely egoistic reasons for her flip-flop concerning the primaries in Michigan and Florida.

WHAT FATES IMPOSE, that men MUST needs abide;
It BOOTS NOT to RESIST both wind and tide.”
-William Shakespeare

Once she had witnessed Barack transcend the merely physical realm of politics, she then desired to get a firm, metaphysical grasp of fate and change it in accordance with her will in a way that was both heroic and villainous. No matter what happened, she would not stay down for the count. But now, her campaign has fallen yet again, the referee is counting, and the crowd is chanting Obama’s name. This trivial yet significant Hillary misstatement has become a media spectacle which has been owed by fate to Hillary for quite a while. Some have even gone so far as to predict this gaffe to be the end of her political career. Spirit is as it is because of what was and the individual will cannot fight it. Hillary’s metaphysical rebellion is admirable, but the development of the dialectic is inevitable. And while we should try to follow her example in rebelling against History and/or Spirit, we, unlike Hillary, should never forget Amor Fati. Her resentment towards Our Messiah Barack Obama over a presidential term that she feels is owed to her has made itself fairly conspicuous. Hillary’s campaign is a comic tragedy that even the Ancient Greeks would praise. The once proud, arrogant, elitist, and hubris-filled Hillary Clinton was painfully taken down from the mantle she occupied within the establishment by The Moirae. And thankfully, whether she knows it or not, Hillary Clinton’s heretical campaign has died and all because of a reference to history. (OH THE IRONY!) And all that is left, is to follow Our Lord and Savior Barack Obama into a New Testament of American history, into the New Jerusalem, into the Kingdom of God!

Jesus said unto him, LET THE DEAD BURY THEIR DEAD: but GO thou and PREACH the KINGDOM OF GOD. [Luke 9:60]

"He Can Do Anything! He's Barack Obama!"

He smells like caramel!

This MadTV skit pretty much sums up the current political Zeitgeist. As John McCain maintains his position as the inevitable Republican nominee, the race between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton has entered into, what Barack Obama referred to as, "silly season". The Clinton campaign's desperation, in the face of Barack Obama's increasing dominance at the primaries, has sunk Hillary to shameful lows. She's accused him of plagiarising in his speeches, of being nothing but rhetoric [ironic coming from a Clinton], and has helped circulate pictures of Barack Obama dressed in a turban and tunic, during a visit to Kenya, in order to conjure up some Islamophobia amongst the voters. Yet despite the immense amounts of monkey feces which Hillary has released from her bowels and flung at Barack, Barack has, as if his regular diet consisted of ambrosia, managed to deflect all these attacks and come out smelling like roses. He's more invincible than ever, which has done nothing but frustrate the Hillary campaign to no end. It, ironically, reminds me of Bill Clinton's seeming invincibility against his Republican accusers during Bill's multiple sex scandals.
But Barack, despite his rockstar charisma, should not be exempt from harsh criticism merely because he's a better candidate than Hillary Clinton and John McCain. Firstly, being the political superlative of Hillary Clinton and John McCain is not an incredibly difficult task to accomplish. McCain and Clinton are both mild, establishment moderates who stir up feelings of intense nausea amongst hardcore left and right wingers and amongst revolutionaries [the people who REALLY HOPE for CHANGE] of all stripes. His campaign's constant repetition of the buzzwords "Hope" and "Change" have always been nothing but rhetorical handjobs given out at every Barack Obama rally. The real "Change" candidates [e.g. Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich, Mike Gravel] have all already been blackballed by the media and forced to become non-entities. For the most part, Barack and Hillary are pretty much the same, old moderate liberal candidate. The same, old reformists who help maintain and strengthen the current political and social system more than their conservative counterparts. The same, old reactionaries-in-revolutionary-garb. Where does anyone see real change and hope in this? All we can do is HOPE that the CHANGE in the presidential office makes the state of our union slightly more tolerable. [Or start a revolution! But I doubt THAT will happen] Mr. Obama is slightly more liberal than Mrs. Clinton, especially when it comes to foreign policy, the War on Terror, and the war in Iraq. Barack's stance against the war in Iraq from the beginning has become common knowledge in the political world. But when it comes to his wishy-washy tolerance of the death penalty, his distaste for gun rights, and all his other lukewarm liberal positions, his credibility as the "Change" candidate diminishes before one's eyes into nicely veiled nothingness. And as anyone who has read this blog knows, I like Barack Obama. But the simple truth is that the race for the Democratic presidential nomination has disintegrated into nothing more than a choice of who's the prettier, cooler liberal. It's like high school all over again. Only now, the person lucky enough to be chosen America's Next Top President has real power. And, unless Ralph Nader were to miraculously pull a viable campaign out of his ass somehow, anyone expecting radical, real change, rather than the mere visual, aesthetic change of having a Black man as president, is deluding themselves.

"I'm Feelin Like My Whole Life Is A Green Light..."

"Never turn red// Cause I strike like a rattlesnake, lock like a dread// Niggas wanna bump heads, but they better off dead!"-Xzibit

Classic video and song by X to the Z. Don't think just cause he be on "Pimp My Ride" that dude is soft! He can mos def spit ruthlessly when he gets on the mic. And I've always liked the concept of this video. Whenever I'm high I seem to feel like I'm in this video. Throughout it, Xzibit is just going about his life even though madness and absurdity surround him constantly during the journey. Then at the end of his journey, he gets a surprise and realizes that the whole journey was meaningless. Great metaphor for life if I ever seen one! Watch out for a cameo by Flava Flav too! Enjoy!!
